Children's Corner: Suryia & Roscoe

In New York State the school curriculum is moving towards having children read non-fiction as well as fiction.  I never read non-fiction until high school and it made me start to wonder what kind of age appropriate non-fiction books are out there -and, more over, would they be any fun?  Then Kidlet brought this home from the library, and I was totally sold.

In South Carolina there is a preserve for endangered species where  an abandoned dog wandered into one day.  Some of the animals were nervous about the new arrival, but an orangutan named Suryia saw the dog and became enthralled; the two became inseparable. The book is full of wonderful, engaging color photographs. It is a story of friendship that anyone can relate to, and a great piece of non-fiction for your child.
