Movie News: One For the Money Casting

As you know, the 3 of us here are/were pretty big Stephanie Plum fans. It's been announced who will be playing Stephanie in the upcoming theatrical release of One For the Money....Katherine Heigl. Photobucket Now, I like her, I do, but do I think she's right for Stephanie...Um NO!! I think this is where the 3 of us agree. It's not that I think she's flat out the wrong choice, I mean they could have gone with Britney Spears Ya'll but I think there are better suited actresses for the role.

Jenn thinks that Zooey Deschanel or Caroline Dhavernas (Wonderfalls: Fox TV show) are good picks. I tend to agree with her.

I think that Sandra Bullock was a shoo-in for the part but maybe she's 1) too old (don't get me started on this) or 2) Stephanie is a little to close to Gracie Lou Freebush from Miss Congeniality. I also think Jennifer Garner would have made a great Stephanie, but she's probably too tall. Before her untimely death I actually think Brittany Murphy would have been a good Stephanie.

Who would you like to see as Stephanie? What are your thoughts about Ms. Heigl. Of course this leads to who should play Morelli and Ranger?

My votes:

Morelli = Jeffrey Donovan (YUM!!)
Ranger = Dwayne Johnson aka The ROCK (Double YUM!!)

You are going to hate me for saying this, but I always picture Julie Roberts when I picture Stephanie.

Julie February 16, 2010 at 4:06 PM

Oh I don't hate you! I can totally see it.

After watching the very short-lived series The Unusuals, I thought Amber Tamblyn (Joan of Arcadia) would be good for Stephanie.

Never thought of Jeffrey Donovan for Ranger, but that's a good idea. I don't see Ranger as The Rock, though. Not sure who I would pick.

I definitely agree that Heigl is an awful choice, though.

Julie February 17, 2010 at 9:10 PM

Ooh I kind of like Amber Tamblyn for Stephanie.

Jenn February 17, 2010 at 9:45 PM

Could Cristián de la Fuente pull off Ranger? I'm not sure... it'd be interesting. (Although maybe interesting like a train wreck...)

My husband suggested Kristen Bell... I'm not sure I see that, but she could probably pull it off.

Julie February 18, 2010 at 9:30 AM

Who is Cristian de la Fuente? :)
Kristen Bell can at least be silly but I don't know if she can pull off messy.

Jenn February 18, 2010 at 3:45 PM

I love de la Fuente in "In Plain Sight" but I don't know if he could carry off the Ranger thing...

I always thought Lauren Graham would be great, but like Sandra may just be a few years too old for the role.

Jenn February 21, 2010 at 9:27 PM

Ooo! Lauren Graham would rock! Why didn't I think of her???

Julie February 21, 2010 at 10:04 PM

^ You are slacking. Yes she would be great and I'm not even a GG fan.

I think Josh Duhamel would make a great Joe Morelli!

Stephanie March 16, 2010 at 9:53 PM

How about Antonio Sabato Jr for either Ranger or Morelli....smokin hot!!!

Anonymous ,  April 11, 2010 at 7:35 AM

I think Amanda Peet would have been good for Step, Eddie Cibrian for Joe and maybe either Shemar Moore or Antonio Sabato Jr for Ranger.

I think that Marisa Tomei could have played a great Stephanie Plum - just think of her in My Cousin Vinnie.

I think Rose McGowan would do a good Stephanie Plum and also agree with the Amber Tamblyn call.

I think Jeffrey Dean Morgan for Morelli...I have no idea for Ranger. In my head he's a beefed up Benjamin Bratt-ish.. but even that's not quite right.

All that said..I think Katherine Heigl will ruin any chance of this being good.

What you need to understand is that Katherine Heigl wasn't cast. She didnt audition for the role. The entire reason the movie is getting made is because she wanted to do it. She is also producing the movie. If she doesn't do it, it doesn't get made and it goes back to languishing like it has since 1994. I think she is a terrific actress and will do a great job as Steph. Janet Evanovich even liked the idea of Katherine in the role and said Sandra Bullock was too old (there is a Youtube video check it out).

Jenn May 8, 2010 at 9:43 PM

Kelly, I'd rather it didn't get made than see Heigl do it. I feel that strongly about it.

Jess May 10, 2010 at 3:30 PM

I wish people wouldn't be so negative about Heigl! I wouldn't have picked her out, but I'm willing to give her a shot. I can see it going either way.

Morelli = although I find Jeffrey Donovan to be tasty, he doesn't seem rugged enough for how I've pictured Morelli. He's also one of those "skinny ripped" kind of guys. I've been picturing Jeffrey Dean Morgan or someone who looks like him.

Vinnie = I haven't seen anyone talk about him! I think Steve Shirripa would be perfect! (Bobby from The Sopranos) He's Italian and has the perfect body type for Vinnie. Perfect match!

Jess May 10, 2010 at 3:32 PM

I love Sandra and I don't think she's old, but I do think she's too old for the role. If this movie had been filmed even just 5 years ago, I think it would have worked. Ten would have been perfect!!!! I love her and she would have been perfect! I'm also liking Amber Tamblyn for the role...good call!!!!

I also think the Rock would be a good pick...if not him then someone with his EXACT body!

Julie May 10, 2010 at 4:44 PM

I don't dislike Katherine Heigl. I dislike her for this role. (I actually want to see Killers). People feel so passionate about Steph that maybe a relatively unknown actress might have been better.

Jess May 10, 2010 at 5:41 PM

Oh, Julie! You aren't bad! I was actually referring more to some other articles I've read: the ones who say they won't see the movie because of her.

I'm on the same page as you - I like her too, but not too keen on her in the role. (Miscommunication on my end!)

I think Vin Diesel or Jason Momoa would be great for Ranger. Maybe it's all the comedies he's been in lately, but I just don't find the Rock menacing enough any more. I think it's much harder to come up with an appropriate Joe, but I think Matt Bomer from the show White Collar would be amazing.

janieo July 7, 2010 at 11:31 PM

I think Drew Barrymore would make a great Stephanie

I didn't think Katherie Heigl could pull it off at first...but if you look online at some of the movie stills she really does look the part.
It looks like they frizzed her hair
to look like Stephnie's.
As for the guys I think they did a pretty good casting especially with Morelli!
