Children's Corner: Should I Share My Ice Cream?

I am very grateful to Julie for bringing Mo Willems books into our lives.  I'm even more grateful to discover the Elephant and Piggie series because up until then I was thinking he could only write poignant books that make parent's bawl (Knuffle Bunny, City Dog, Country Frog, etc.), but since discovering this series, we make a special trip to the 'W' section each visit to the library.  (We have yet to foray into the Pigeon  series, but we look forward to that too.)

Elephant and Piggie are best of friends, but Gerald the elephant is a worrier.  Gerald spends so much time worrying "What will happen if..." that often times he misses out; luckily he usually has Piggie around to balance things out.  Unfortunately, when he has to make this very difficult decision about sharing, he has to make it alone.  Sharing is hard, but sharing delectable ice cream?  That's even harder.  Once again, time runs out for Gerald's decision making but fortunately, Piggie comes around to save the day.

Mo Willems books are such stellar examples of friendship and relationships.  They're funny, they're touching, and they're accessible to children and adults.  Mr. Willems has a rare gift.  He is one of our favorite children's authors... one of the few ones whose entire collection would happily be added to our already overstuffed bookshelf --and that's saying something.
